This weekend, I had the privilege of representing Coldwell Banker Hedges Realty at the 2nd Annual Cedar Rapids Society of St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor Walk. CBH Realty supports a number of great events in the Corridor, but this one is near and dear to my heart, as I have served as President of the local council for the past three years.
Before I became involved in SVdP, I was blissfully unaware of the plight of the poor right here in Cedar Rapids. One hears stories of welfare abuse, and some of that is certainly true, but there are a shocking number of needy people who simply don’t have the means to put food on the table. SVdP provides food boxes if you’re hungry, rental/utility assistance if you’re on the verge of homelessness, and will even give out furniture and housewares if you’re just getting back on your feet. Children’s books are freely given to all kids who visit the thrift store that provides funds for their many programs.
The Friends of the Poor Walk was a fun opportunity for local parishioners, benefactors and Vincentians to get together and remember why we do the work that we do and celebrate our successes of the past year. With Coldwell Banker Hedges Realty’s support, we were able to raise nearly $11,000 – funds that will be used to directly serve the poor by purchasing food and providing financial assistance. If you are client of Coldwell Banker Hedges, then you have helped to serve the poor in our community, and for that, I am extremely grateful.
The best part of serving at SVdP is when a former client becomes a benefactor. We see it over and over again: people whom we have previously served providing assistance to others once they are back on their feet. This spirit of generosity is just one of the many reasons that I am proud to call Cedar Rapids “home.”
